Discussing symptoms and medical history with a doctor may make some patients feel uncomfortable. When colon conditions are involved, many feel an added degree of sensitivity. However, colon conditions negatively impact health, may cause a number of uncomfortable side effects, and often lead to more serious complications. For these reasons, it is vital that these conditions be treated in a timely manner. Familial adenomatous polyposis, also known as FAP, is a rare genetic condition that affects the colon, and can lead to a number of complications, if left untreated. The primary risk of FAP is the development of colon cancer. In order to avoid this risk, as well as the uncomfortable side effects that are likely to develop as this condition progresses, it is important to seek medical treatment.

At the Laparoscopic Surgical Center of New York, our team of doctors offers treatment for a variety of colon conditions, including FAP. We take a conservative approach to these treatments, offering minimally invasive surgical procedures that can effectively improve colon health while minimizing recovery time. When seeking treatment for familial polyposis, our New York, NY patients should consider the benefits of laparoscopic surgery.

The team at Laparoscopic Surgical Center of New York offers excellent treatment of stomach and bowel disorders that affect people's overall health and wellness. This includes treatment of serious colon conditions and rectal problems, including obstructions and more severe problems.

We'd like to use this post to consider a type of obstruction known as volvulus, which can start as a painful case of constipation but then lead to serious issues with overall wellness.

About Volvulus

Volvulus refers to a malrotation of part of the intestine, leading to twisting of the lower bowel or colon. This is a potential cause of bowel obstruction. One of the more well-known and most common forms of volvulus is sigmoid colon volvulus, a condition common in Asia and India due to their high-fiber diet, and also common in Peru and Bolivia because of high altitude.

Laparoscopic Surgical Center of New York is pleased to announce the publication of The SAGES Manual of Groin Pain, co-edited by our very own Brian P. Jacob, MD. This resource serves an important need that has gone largely unfulfilled until now. Each year, more than 40,000 patients seek out a diagnosis for pain in the groin, pelvis, or lower abdomen and are often frustrated by the relative lack of information available, as well as the scarcity of professionals with specialized knowledge of the subject. Although The SAGES Manual of Groin Pain is intended for surgeons, the frustration faced by patients highlights the need for a specialty or specialists focused on groin pain.

Dr. Jacob edited The SAGES Manual of Groin Pain along with Dr. Bruce Ramshaw, Dr. David C. Chen, and Dr. Shirin Towfigh. The manual provides surgeons with a comprehensive guide to all aspects of groin pain they might encounter at their practices. In addition to serving as an editor, Dr. Jacob also contributed as an author to several chapters, including “Chronic Post-inguinal Herniorrhaphy Pain: A Patient’s Perspective” (co-authored with David C. Chen) and “Right Inguinal Hernia with Osteitis Pubis: A Case Report of Osteitis Pubis and Ipsilateral Inguinal Hernia” (co-authored with Naif A. Al-Enazi).

Laparoscopic Surgical Center of New York would like to congratulate Dr. Jacob on the latest of his many impressive career accomplishments.

At Laparoscopic Surgical Center of New York, we have invested in the most advanced surgical technologies and the finest diagnostic systems in order to provide our patients with care of the most surpassing standard. None of these investments would mean anything without the core of our practice, our team comprising some of the most esteemed and trusted surgeons in the United States. It is our honor to recognize one particular member of this team, Anthony Vine, MD, whose skill as a laparoscopic surgeonhas earned him a spot on New York Magazine’s prestigious Best Doctors list for 2015. This is the second time that Dr. Vine has been named to the magazine’s Best Doctors list.

Dr. Vine’s inclusion on this list is especially noteworthy in that his selection was determined by his peers throughout the Greater New York area, specifically the five boroughs, Westchester and Nassau Counties, Northern New Jersey, and Fairfield County, Connecticut. New York Magazine works with medical research firm Castle Connolly each year to survey doctors in the area, asking them “To whom would you send a member of your family” in given specialties. Hundreds of doctors agreed that they would entrust the care of their loved ones to Dr. Vine in the specialty of general surgery.

“It is a privilege to be included on the Best Doctors list,” Dr. Vine stated. “To be recognized by my colleagues like this is a true honor. I love what I do, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to do it, day in and day out.”
